Leonardo at 500: Future of Healthcare

“Talent hits a target no one else can hit. Genius hits a target no one else can see.”

In the five hundred years since his death, few polymaths have matched the intellect, ingenuity and artistry of Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519). Although more famous for iconic paintings such as The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa, it is in his Codices, where one can really appreciate his expansive vision and unparalleled skills in bridging art, science and technology.

Codex is proud to curate an event inspired by Leonardo’s detailed studies and intricate drawings of human anatomy and physiology. The theme of this event will be to examine the latest technologies in medicine and healthcare, whilst reflecting on Leonardo’s legacy.

The hallmark of Codex events are Codex Talks which are concise presentations, lasting 15 minutes (or less), in which the speaker addresses a challenging question faced by their technology or industry today and ends with a bold prediction for the future. Codex Talks are engaging, entertaining and elucidating. They give the audience something they can walk away with: valuable insights, actionable information, fresh perspectives, and renewed optimism.

Prof. Dr. Frank Fehrenbach
Leonardo Scholar, University of Hamburg

Frank Fehrenbach is globally recognised as an outstanding scholar who has revitalised art history and established it as overarching Visual Studies.

He received international acclaim for his studies on the works of Leonardo da Vinci in which he examines aspects of art history in a new interdisciplinary context invoking mathematics, optics, physics, geoscience and psychology.

Fehrenbach thus overcomes the boundaries of his discipline and sets new benchmarks for art history as one of the innovative humanities. In Hamburg Fehrenbach is due to spearhead the realignment of the long-established Department of Art History and build up and lead a cross-disciplinary Research Centre on Images of Nature which is set to play a pioneering role in art history internationally.
Dr. Rabia Khan
Chief of Translational Medicine, Sensyne Health

Rabia has a background in immuno-genetics and is focussed on bridging the worlds of science, business and technology in the areas of medicine, healthcare, network biology and genomics. She currently leads the machine learning team, genomics programme and scientific strategy at Sensyne Health plc – a clinical AI company.

Rabia’s work at Sensyne Health sees her collaborating closely with clinicians and NHS Trusts to effectively use real world evidence (RWE) to accelerate the discovery and development of new medicines, improve clinical trial design and deliver better patient care using novel methodologies applied to ethically sourced, anonymised patient data.

Prior to joining Sensyne Health, Rabia held senior roles at BenevolentAI and Meta. At Meta (acquired by Chan Zuckerberg BioHub), she was pivotal in the partnership with the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) to acquire horizon-scanning technology that used NLP to research the biomedical corpus. At BenevolentAI, she led the Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Glioblastoma drug discovery programmes and served as the interface between the technical and biological teams alongside Prof. Jackie Hunter.

Rabia holds a PhD in Human Genetics from McGill University, where she studied the genetics underlying the host immune response to Typhoid. Rabia has an MBA from Concordia University and was a post-doctoral fellow at the Francis the Crick Institute working on establishing cellular models for immune response to Toxoplasma infection. Rabia regularly presents on embracing the intersection of healthcare and technology to advance better patient outcomes and advocates the importance of STEM in industry and education.
Caroline Hargrove
CTO, Babylon Health

Caroline is Babylon’s CTO, with responsibility over the Technologies and AI products. She is also a Non-Executive Director at Ceres Power and a Trustee of the National Saturday Clubs.

She has experience in a range of sectors from motorsports to health, elite sports, manufacturing and energy. She started her career as a lecturer in Engineering in Cambridge, followed by various roles in McLaren F1, mainly focused on the development of simulations and the first F1 simulator. She moved to McLaren Applied Technologies as a founding member, and helped grow the company to over 500 strong where she was its CTO before moving to Babylon.

Caroline is also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and was, until recently, a Visiting Professor at Oxford and holds a PhD in Applied Mechanics from the University of Cambridge.
Dr. Luciano Rossetti
Global Head of R&D, Merck Biopharma

Luciano Rossetti, MD, is Executive Vice President, Global Head of Research & Development and a member of the Healthcare Executive Committee.

As Global Head of R&D, Rossetti leads the strategy for Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany’s discovery and development efforts in Healthcare. He joined Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany in July, 2014, and has since led the acceleration of several key programs through the pipeline, with FDA approvals in multiple indications for the company’s immuno-oncology franchise as well as a major approval for the company’s neurology franchise in MS. He has also advanced the innovation of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany’s discovery teams into development, including bintrafusp alfa and evobrutinib. Under his leadership, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany’s Healthcare R&D is focused on delivering the scientific, clinical, regulatory and medical excellence of its teams to patients in need.

Before joining Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, Rossetti served as Senior Vice President, responsible for Global Scientific Strategy and Late Stage Development at Merck & Co. In the latter position, he was responsible for clinical development from Phase II to Phase V across all therapeutic areas.

Prior to joining Merck & Co. in 2006, Rossetti spent 18 years in academia during which he had considerable involvement with the pharmaceutical industry in both discovery and development. In his latest assignment, he was Professor of Medicine and led the Diabetes Research & Training Center at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Rossetti has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed scientific journals. He is a Post-Doctoral Fellow of Rome University Medical School and of Yale University Medical School. He holds a Doctorate in Medicine from the Trieste University Medical School, Italy.
